Eyeglasses

Eyeglasses

Design, material and treatments are the three components that make up a pair of prescription lenses. It is important to select the right combination of these elements for your particular visual needs and to always consult your eye care professional.
The knowledgeable staff at Greider Eye Associates will consider long-term wearing comfort, style, features and function when suggesting a new pair of eyeglasses. The eyeglasses become as unique as the person taking them home.

Eyeglass Lenses

Eyeglass Lenses

Selecting the right eyeglass lens depends largely on its function. From single vision lenses to progressive polycarbonate lenses, we are happy to help you find what best suits your needs. Regardless of your situation, your eye care provider can help determine what types of lenses will work best for you in terms of comfort, function and design.

Frame Styles

Frame Styles

When choosing a frame, the shape and size of the frame should enhance the color of your eyes, complement your skin tone and play up the best features of your face shape.

Most people need more than one pair of glasses, such as one for everyday wear and another for outdoor activities. Having different style frames for different activities and moods makes wearing glasses more fun.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Blepharoplasty is a very common aesthetic surgical procedure. As we age, excess skin can form around our eyes, causing us to look older, tired, wrinkled, or puffy. This is natural because, as we grow older, our skin loses elasticity and previously tight tissues can begin to droop. With eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), we work toward restoring a youthful and refreshed appearance to your eyes without noticeable scarring.

When we look at the tissues around the eyes, we need to consider the upper and lower areas separately. The upper eyelid is connected to, and very influenced by, the brow. The tissues below the eyes are connected to the cheek. So when we address the eyelids, we have to consider and often work with the condition of these surrounding areas to achieve the correct effect.

Corneal Surgery

Corneal Transplant:
The cornea is the clear covering of the front of the eye which bends, or refracts, light rays as they enter the eye. For clear vision to occur, the cornea must have the correct shape and clarity to focus incoming light rays precisely on the retina at the back of the eye. When the cornea becomes cloudy or misshapen from injury, infection or disease, transplantation may be recommended to replace it.

Corneal transplants are usually performed with local anesthesia so there is no pain. During the procedure, the cornea is replaced with one from a human donor. The new cornea carries little risk of rejection and can last for many years.

DSAEK:
DSAEK is the latest technique in corneal transplantation. Short for Descimet-stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty, DSAEK offers clear post-operative vision and short recovery time to patients in need of new corneas.

During the procedure, the surgeon makes a mark in the surface of the patient’s cornea with a trephine (an instrument used to cut circular sections of tissue). That mark serves two purposes: it helps the surgeon determine what size the transplant should be, and it outlines the area of the patient’s cornea that needs to be peeled away. Next, the surgeon scores the damaged section of the cornea and strips the membrane away from the eye. Then the donor cornea is folded into a “taco” shape and placed on the eye. A single stitch closes the incision.

How LASIK Surgery Works LASIK surgery reshapes your cornea with a cool laser to refocus how light enters your eye. The treatment is a minimally-invasive, virtually painless procedure conducted on an outpatient basis in a vision center or an eye surgeon’s clinic that has a special temperature and humidity controlled operating room. Contact us to learn more about the steps of LASIK treatment and what exactly happens when you receive laser vision correction. You can also discover how quickly LASIK post-op can get you back to your normal routine after your treatment.

Cataract Surgery

A cataract is a clouding that develops in the natural crystalline lens of the eye. The lens works much like a camera lens, focusing light onto the retina at the back of the eye. The lens also adjusts the eye’s focus, letting us see things clearly both up close and far away. The clouding can be varying in degree from slight to complete opacity and obstructing the passage of light. Early in the development of age-related cataract the power of the lens may be increased, causing near-sightedness (myopia), and the gradual yellowing and opacification of the lens. Cataracts typically progress slowly to cause vision loss and are potentially blinding if untreated. The condition usually affects both the eyes, but almost always one eye is affected earlier than the other.Cataracts are usually due to the aging process but can also be caused by eye trauma, heredity, diabetes, and even some medications. Currently, cataracts are the leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide.

Symptoms:

  • Cloudy, fuzzy, foggy or filmy vision
  • Glare from lamps or the sun, which may be severe
  • Difficulty driving at night due to glare from headlights
  • Frequent changes in eyeglass prescription
  • Double vision
  • “Second sight” with temporary improvement in near vision (such as that needed for reading) in farsighted people
  • Difficulty performing daily activities because of vision problems

Refractive surgery

Types of cataracts:

  • In the nucleus called a nuclear cataract, forms in the center of the lens. This is generally caused by the natural aging process.
  • At the cortex named the cortical cataract, forms around the edges of the lens and extends into the center. This is seen frequently in diabetics.
  • At the back called a posterior subcapsular cataract, forms at the back of the lens. It can form for a variety of reasons including in people with diabetes or high farsightedness.
